A cast piece is created from wax & then cast into metal.

Wax carving is a lot like sculpturing but in a miniature state. The jeweler starts with a block of carving wax & using a sketch, a photograph or simply a design in the mind’s eye, begins manipulating the wax model using coarse files, heated wax pens, high speed rotary tools and/or picks similar to those found in your dentist’s office. By means of this method, the wax model is formed, creating an exact replica of what the piece will look like when cast into metal.

The wax is then placed into a metal cylinder & a plaster-of-paris type substance (called investment) is poured over the model. It is then placed into an oven & the wax is burned out, leaving a cavity of the existing design for molten metal to be poured into.

The now turned metal piece is then extracted from the investment, polished & stones or whatever finishing techniques the design calls for are then applied.
